Book Review of “Run” by Ann Patchett

I don’t usually read fiction, but I have friends who, for years, have been encouraging me to read more fiction, so when a good friend handed me “Run,” a novel by Ann Patchett, I was a little skeptical, but it was the holidays so I decided to read it.
Wow! I was surprised at not only how much I enjoyed reading this fiction story, but at how much it really make me think and how much of the story I could apply to my life…and my business.
Without revealing the storyline, you will want to read the book for that, I am going to tell you the lessons I got from this amazing story that kept me reading and riveted to know what was going to happen next.
First, it was a great reminder to me to pay attention to what and who is around me. As we get focused on our lives, we all have a tendency to have tunnel vision and we forget to look at the world, to look at the bigger picture than us and to see. To see others, to see the beauty of nature, to see ourselves and our loved ones. To pay attention and be tuned in to things outside of ourselves, and to stay aware.
Do what you love. On some level, you have to keep the things in your life that mean the most to you…no matter what they are. It could be working out, it could be reading or journaling or cooking or walks in nature. It doesn’t really matter what it is, just find a way to keep it in your life, instead of letting life get in the way and losing track of the things that are important to you.
Finally, the importance of family — either the one you were born into, the one you chose, or both. They aren’t always physically close, but you have to give them some attention and keep them close in your heart and let them know how important they are to you. Ultimately, they are the ones you can count on, depend on and who bring joy and love to your life.
I know this isn’t my typical review, but I would recommend you read the book and see what you get out of it. I’d love to hear what you think….
