Are You Living Your Dream… Or Somebody Else’s

Are you living your dream or somebody else’s?
How’s that for hitting you square in the forehead today?
I heard this question over the weekend, and it took my breath away a little bit.
It reminded me of a conversation I recently had with a plumber who was at my house fixing a water geyser in the yard.
He had his 8, 11 and 12-year-old sons with him and they were doing some of the work. As the plumber and I were chatting, I asked him if the boys enjoyed working with him.
I immediately knew by the look on his face this was the first time he had even considered that question.
He was teaching them what he knew. His trade (which is fine). He hadn’t considered their dreams or what they were interested in.
Many of us have done the same kind of thing in our lives and our businesses.
From where we live to what we do. Even how we run our businesses or the services we offer.
I know I started out modeling my business based on how a mentor ran his business. For a while I even modeled his personality. That was a huge mistake on my part.
Think for a minute about what you do and how you do it.
Can you honestly say you’re doing things your way?
Are you doing what you want? How you want?
