Book Review of “The Thank You Economy” by Gary Vaynerchuk

“The Thank You Economy” by Gary Vaynerchuk, is my favorite book that I have read so far this year. This is a down-to-earth, practical, tell it like it is book, on social media and marketing.
I especially like Chapter 3 where Gary talks about the reasons why some very smart people dismiss the use of social media and then he goes into the reasons they really shouldn’t. If you’ve ever had a conversation with somebody who is not convinced that social media is worth their time, you immediately resonate with eleven reasons Gary discusses and the arguments he uses to back them up.
Gary says “it’s utter insanity for any company not to have a Facebook and Twitter presence in 2011.” He goes on to say “there is not a single company out there that cannot benefit from adding social media to its marketing strategy.”
I fully agree with both of these statements. Done properly, social media is a must for all companies, big and small alike.
I especially like the fact that he talks about integrating your social media into all of your other marketing strategies and media. This is a concept we have been teaching and talking about for years. Integrating your marketing across all media will always produce the greatest results for your campaigns. He talks about this as layering your media and extending the story which just makes perfect sense.
An important point I haven’t heard anybody else really talk about is that social media is as applicable and viable for the business to business (B to B) marketer as it is to the person providing products and services to the business to consumer (B to C). After all, it all ends up with a person and we’re all consumers, aren’t we?
The only thing I was a little disappointed in about the book were daily cialis “>overnight delivery cialis the sample Twitter posts Gary Vaynerchuk shared on the pages of his book were very small and I found them extremely difficult to read – I wish they had been larger. But, if that’s my only issue with the book, and it is, then that’s a pretty small thing, huh?
Here’s an amazing statistic that I have to admit I was shocked by. Vaynerchuk states another source for this, but says the in today’s world, every two days, people create as much information as they did from the dawn of civilization to 2003. Is that amazing to think about or what?
This book is definitely worth the time it will take you to read it, but if, for some strange reason, you decide you don’t want to do that, there is a two page Quick Version of the book that is a bulleted list of the main points in the book. I loved this book and this two page wrap-up is one of the reasons because I love being able to look at a short list of items on occasion to remind me of important issues.
It’s all about building relationships in today’s world, and this book is right on target with its points about the best ways to do just that on social media.
Although, I’m sure they wouldn’t do it, I think this book provides such a strong argument for social media that the next time somebody gives me an excuse why they aren’t using social media or tells me it doesn’t work or hasn’t worked for them in the past, I’d like to just give them this book and ask them to read it. I’m that sure it would change their minds.
I’d love to hear what you think….
