Do You Plan Your Vacations?

I say all the time, most people spend more time planning their vacations than they do planning for their businesses…
And, it’s true.
I get it, planning for vacation is fun for most people.
Planning for your business seems like work.
Hint: work is the thing that makes your business successful and allows you to make money.
The other thing I hear a lot is “Diane, why should I spend time planning when it’s just going to change anyway”?
Of course, on occasion, your plans will change – just like in every other aspect of life.
Have you ever had an appointment scheduled (that you planned in advance) that got cancelled or changed? Have you ever had a flight delay? Ever taken a detour when you were driving because of a road closure?
I could go on and on… but I won’t.
Of course, things change sometimes. It’s inevitable.
Having pre-planned makes those changes, alterations, and detours easier to adapt to.
Afterall, you can always just push the planned activity back a little, or move it up, or reschedule it for later in the quarter or year. It’s still easier than starting from scratch every week, month and quarter.
One of the other myths about planning is that it takes all the spontaneity out of your business.
This isn’t true… it actually allows you to be more spontaneous.
How?
Having a plan means you (and your team) know what you’re supposed to be doing today, tomorrow, next week and next month.
So, when something comes up and you want to shift or pivot, you’ll get less resistance because they will have the tools to be able to quickly execute a new plan and the discipline to get right back to the original plan.
