Honoring Robin Roberts

Robin Roberts epitomizes the essence of strength, resilience, and grace. As we celebrate Women’s History Month, it’s impossible not to acknowledge the impact she has had, not only in the realm of journalism but also as a beacon of hope and courage for women everywhere.
From her early days as a sports reporter to her prominent role as co-anchor of “Good Morning America,” Robin blazed a trail and she did it authentically, with perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to storytelling.
Robin grew up in Mississippi and played basketball at Southern Louisiana University. She started her broadcasting career primarily as a sportscaster and was the first woman to co-host NFL Primetime.
Her warmth and sincerity resonate with viewers, making her not just a trusted journalist but somebody many consider a cherished friend in homes across the globe…even though most have never met her.
This was never more apparent than when she reported live from Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina hit the area. And again, when a tornado destroyed Rolling Fork, Mississippi in 2023.
What sets Robin apart is not just her professional success, but the challenges she has triumphed over with dignity and grace. Her battle with breast cancer and later myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) served as a testament to her resilience and courage. Through it all, she shared her journey with the world with candor and vulnerability that touched hearts and inspired so many others.
Robin’s impact extends far beyond her personal struggles. As one of the few women of color in mainstream media, she shatters stereotypes and opens doors for generations of aspiring journalists. Her presence on morning television represents not just a voice, but a powerful symbol of diversity and inclusion in an industry (and a world) that still has a way to go in this area.
Robin’s philanthropic efforts and advocacy work further solidifies her status as a true trailblazer and humanitarian. Whether she’s raising awareness for cancer research or championing human rights, she uses her platform to uplift marginalized voices and effect positive change in the world.
As we honor women who have left an indelible mark on history, Robin Roberts stands tall among them, a beacon of inspiration and hope for future generations.
Her journey reminds us that strength is found not in the absence of adversity, but in the way we rise to meet it with courage, grace, and unwavering resolve.
In the words of Robin herself, “Make your mess your message.” And indeed, she has turned her own trials into triumphs, serving as a guiding light for us all.
Robin has written several books, which I have enjoyed reading.
