Building Communities of the Future – There’s Money in the Community
A while ago, I attended Armand Morin’s Big Seminar. Because I love the challenge of the internet, I was completely in awe of everyone I met, including every speaker. Each speaker spoke briefly about this thing called Web 2.0 but no one actually addressed what the heck it was. Being smart a*^&^, I assumed it was some new version of internet explorer or Windows XP. (It’s Ok, you can laugh!)
If you are at all like me and try to keep up with the new twists in technology, Web 2.0, Social Media Marketing and Social Book Marketing is mentioned in most marketing now. Still to most marketers it’s “Greek”? But this is the new marketing frontier, the wave of the future. Relationships, positioning yourself as an expert, but yet being perceived as approachable and real, is where the next generation of prospects and clients will be found.
Recently, Dr. Joe Vitale of Hypnotic Marketing, interviewed one of the world’s most well-known Web 2.0 experts, Alicia Wright and it really started to “click”. Here are some ideas on how to start getting involved in this social media experience and the 4 sites you need to know about to start building your community.
Nearly every marketer in the world knows of, has a page on, or is using these 5 websites:
- Blogs (WordPress.com or Blogger.com)
- MySpace.com – A social network for a younger crowd mainly. Organizing a group and having many friends can increase your list.
- YouTube.com – The Number 1 Social video site in the world. You can link your YouTube videos to your blog, website or other social networks.
- Ebay.com – The Number 1 shopping site in the world. EBay can be a great lead generator for your business but the leads don’t convert well for info product.
- Amazon.com – Amazon is quickly building many platforms for social networking.
I won’t explore the sites mentioned above here. What I will talk about is the 3 must use social sites that can bring thousands of leads to your funnel and visitors to your site overnight. All 3 sites use the concept of book marketing, just like the bookmarking you do for your favorite sites on your own computer.
These sites are:
- FaceBook.com – This is a Professional Networking social site. Facebook has over 500 million members. You can set up a business page, join groups, form groups, set personal profiles, play games and actually collect friends which like similar niches and interests. It’s a great way to keep in touch with business associates and friends on Facebook. Not only is it fun but, you can actually hold classes, post your websites and build a truer relationship with your Facebook friends (in comparison to MySpace). You can link Facebook to your Blackberry, iPhone or PDA and keep your friends up-to-date with what you’re doing.
- Digg.com – Digg.com is full of user driven social content. What that means is all of the content is submitted by users. Everything on Digg.com is submitted by the community (that would be you). After you submit content, other people read your submission and bookmark what they like best. If your story or article is well liked and receives enough Diggs, it is promoted to the front page for millions of visitors to see. Your content is read and bookmarked by thousand sending them to your website. Digg.com is a social news site.
- StumbleUpon.com – When you join StumbleUpon.com you tell the program what your interests are (relating to your subject, interests or niche of course), then you just stumble upon websites that are relevant to your interests. Stumbleupon.com will recommend sites that may be of interest to you. You can visit those sites and leave a review for your friends. It really sets up a “viral” type atmosphere. You can connect with friends and share your discoveries, meet people that have similar interests.
- Twitter.com – Twitter is a fun website and can generate tons of leads as well. Twitter and Facebook can be linked so when you post a status update on Twitter, it will also post on Facebook. Pretty cool, Hey? Twitter messages are simple 1 or 2 liners consisting of 140 characters. Friends read messages and some might be intrigued enough to click on a link or check out more information – they might be impressed enough by what you share to consider you an expert. If they land on your Facebook page they will see your website, profile and other friends and maybe join your group. It’s all about building RELATIONSHIPS!
You can build a ton of traffic combining the power of these social sites. It might sound a little confusing but once you start getting into it, as a marketer, you will quickly understand the power of Web 2.0 in your business.
Critical Key To Being Respected In Social Networking
The trend is that people who are reading your posts and articles don’t want to be sold – they would rather have a conversation. They want to build trust and confidence in you and build a RELATIONSHIP. They usually act on referrals and recommendations from friends. It’s a community of sharing content and interesting things in life. See the power this can have in your market?
For most of us, we are really busy and don’t really want to do all of this social networking stuff ourselves, however it’s important that you do your due diligence and understand how you can use these tools, communities and concepts effectively.
Here is a list of other Web 2.0 sites you may want to investigate.
