Yesterday…And 9-11-01

Today’s message is a bit different than most you get from me.
Yesterday was September 11th – a day I’m sure none of us who were alive will ever forget – and for some reason it’s been on my mind a lot lately. Not sure why this particular year, but it is.
Do you remember where you were and what you were doing on that day 18 years ago? There are a few days and dates like this in my life that stick out. Where you remember exactly where you were and what was happening at the moment you found out about the event…know what I mean?
I remember being glued to the TV – all day long…almost mesmerized and in disbelief that this was happening.
I made a few calls to friends who either might have been traveling that day or who lived in the areas affected and they were all safe. For years, I didn’t even know anyone who was there or who lost a friend or family member on 9/11. That has now changed and so has the impact this day has on me now – after hearing their stories and what it was like being close to the towers on that day.
I’m not trying to be morbid here or pull on your heartstrings. And, I intentionally didn’t send this message out yesterday because I never want to do anything that even appears to take away from other’s processing on 9/11.
So many things changed about our lives that day – whether you knew anybody who lost their life that day, whether you were in one of the affected areas, or if you weren’t – it changed how we fly and so many things about our lives. One of the things I remember most was the flags flying – on people’s cars, homes and businesses…and how people came together for a while. (Personally, I’d like to see more of the coming together on a more regular basis now…any ideas about how you and I can do that or affect positive change in that area).
I’m writing about both because I find it cathartic and because, as you might have noticed, I’ve been sending you more messages in the past week or so. Some are business related and some are just things that are happening in or around my life.
The topic of connection came up a week or so ago when talking to a friend and business associate, so I decided to communicate with you more – both about business things and just life and things in general. It occurred to me that I primarily talk about business and marketing and while that’s great, you can get that in plenty of other places. I’d like to know you better and to do that I have to let you know me better too.
